Muhammad Wasif Bashir Babar

Pakistan

Description

Since a teenager, Wasif has been on a quest to raise awareness around water-related issues. He lost his father to a water-related illness, which he got from drinking contaminated water near his home.

The tragic event led him on a path to study sociology and philosophy, completing two masters, which he’s been using to raise awareness and actively participate in water efforts. His aim is to adopt a multi-dimensional approach, in order to truly resolve the core of a challenge. He believes that if there are challenges, there are infinite opportunities.

Wasif has been a member of the World Youth Parliament for Water since 2014, joining during his Master in Philosophy. It has provided him access to a large community of like-minded youth that shares his passion. He believes the WYPW to be a great and dynamic platform that offers knowledge and connections to youth globally.

His participation has offered him credibility, through which he founded the Pakistan Youth Parliament for Water, which has been very active to promote and raise awareness around water issues in his country. This credibility has been essential as the relationship with decision-makers wasn’t always perfect – organizing events, rallies, appearing in different panels and conferences, has given the PYWP and youth the trust of decision-makers.

The involvement of youth is essential in Pakistan, where they make up the majority of the population. Water is the backbone of the country, supporting agriculture, and Wasif believes that the participation of youth in the decision-making processes will help solve water stress.

Wasif is driven by his passion and love for water, and through the World Youth Parliament for Water, he has been able to share it with others around the world.
