Description

Juliane Schillinger is a PhD candidate at the Department of Governance and Technology for Sustainability at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, where she studies the impacts of conflict on local water management in the Middle East. She joined the World Youth Parliament for Water in spring 2018 for the 4th General Assembly in Brasilia, which was organized around the theme ‘water and peace.’

With a background in international water management and water diplomacy, the peacebuilding potential of water and the role it can play in conflicts, are at the forefront of Juliane’s research. She is an active ambassador for the Blue Peace movement at WYPW events and beyond, particularly in the Middle East. Her research also got her involved with the Environmental Peacebuilding Association, where she is collaborating with colleagues working on water and peace all across the world and is a part of the Young Professionals Interest Group, which aims to strengthen the role of young people within the association and in peacebuilding processes at large.

As an avid athlete, Juliane holds the deep belief that research, much like water management, should be a team sport. She was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the WYPW’s Research Group in 2019, which connects students and early career scientists from all over the world. Under Juliane’s leadership, the group’s key mission is to empower young researchers and to conduct and promote youth-led research related to the water sector. Speaking about the prospects for climate science in AGWA’s ClimateReady podcast, Juliane also emphasized the importance of young researchers in driving paradigm shifts within the scientific community and making research more accessible for the broader public.
