5th WYPW General Assembly

A milestone for the WaterGeneration

  • The past editions of the World Youth Parliament for Water (WYPW) General Assembly (2012, 2015 and 2018) were held during the World Water Forum (WWForum) and allowed for hundreds of youth from all over the world to expand their knowledge regarding water security, develop essential skills, grow their network and advocate for proper youth representation.

For this 5th edition, the International Secretariat for Water (ISW) – which is at the origin of the Youth Parliaments for Water – and the WYPW decided to present a new and innovative format to maximize the potential impact of the event and youth engagement while ensuring the health and safety of all participants. The General Assembly has been designed in a bimodal program combining an online event (which took place on March 2021) and in-person activities (planned for March 2022).

In the midst of the pandemic, the 1st part of the GA held in virtual mobilized more than 600 young people from +50 countries who took part in +40 sessions. To date, this was the largest virtual mobilization of the ‘’youth for water’’ that has taken place and was a key moment to identify priority themes and connect new network members.

The second part of the GA is planned to be held before and during the 9th WWForum - 16th  to 25th of March 2022  - in Senegal. During these 10 days (5 days before the WWForum and 5 days during the Forum). +60 committed youth will be selected for in-person participation. They will have the chance to participate in training sessions given by inspiring professionals, to exchange with their peers from around the world, and most importantly, to bring the voice of youth for water to decision-makers for rapid change. Youth are thirsty for action and change.

    • Discover Senegalese water issues and culture via field visits and activities with local communities.
    • Meet with inspiring and high-level experts and other young water leaders.
    • Influence the water governance by contributing to the 9th WWForum processes and bringing the youth voices to the Head of State Conference.
    • Present youth perspectives and priorities during several sessions and side events of the 9th WWForum.
    • Shape a strong and unified #WaterGeneration.

The Program of the WYPW 5th GA is articulated around three pillars: strengthening the cohesion of the network, increasing the knowledge and skills of young professionals and putting forward the voice of youth.

  • THE INTERNATIONAL SECRETARIAT FOR WATER

The International Secretariat for Water (ISW) is a non-governmental organization based in Montreal, Canada. The ISW envisions a world in which water is equitably accessible to all, fostering the empowerment of local actors as well as cooperation between borders, generations, and institutions. ISW’s mission is to initiate and facilitate actions that contribute to positive systemic changes in the framework of water governance from the local to the global level and to the empowerment of actors involved in the water sector.

One of the three main pillars of the ISW strategy is to empower the #WaterGeneration. ISW’s Youth Strategy 2017-2022’s vision is inspired by the idea of the youth movement for water; a movement that involves the large-scale, dynamic and connected mobilization of young people worldwide. Since 2002, ISW has been supporting and guiding WYPW in the development of new regional Parliaments, connecting youth to decision-making processes, and mobilizing youth to take action.

    WORLD YOUTH PARLIAMENT FOR WATER

The World Youth Parliament for Water (WYPW) is a global network of young leaders acting for water. We are active in more than 80 countries, advocating and acting from local to international levels for a strong youth water management.

This movement of passionate young people generates positive change at all levels: from local communities, where they implement concrete actions, to the United Nations General Assembly, where they advocate for youth participation in the water sector. Over the years, the WYPW has become a recognized and powerful actor in the water sector and beyond.  Youthforwater.org

  • The World Water Forum is the world’s biggest water-related event and is organized by the World Water Council (WWC) and a host country. The World Water Forum contributes to the dialogue of the decision-making process on water at the global level, seeking to achieve the rational and sustainable use of this resource. Given its political, technical and institutional scope, one of the Forum’s main features is the open and democratic participation of actors drawn from different sectors, making it an event of the greatest importance on the international agenda.

The World Water Council organizes the Forum every three years together with the respective host country and city. To date, there have been eight editions of the World Water Forum, in different countries, on four different continents. In 2022, Senegal will be hosting the 9th edition of the World Water Forum. It will be the first time the event is held in the Sub saharan region.
