Sudan Youth Parliament for Water

National

Since 2017

Objective

Our mission is to develop, support and promote the potential of Sudanese youth to contribute in the application of the Sustainable Development Goal No.6 in Sudan: “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all populations”. Our vision is to see youth in Sudan leading water revolution and changing the map of Sudan water supply and sanitation. We value transparency, equality, inclusivity, collaboration, commitment, efficiency, creativity, spirit of adventure, motivation, positivity, perseverance and patriotism.

Our three main objectives are:

• To educate Sudanese youth about their role in solving water challenges.

• To raise the awareness of people about the current water-related challenges across the planet, in all its dimensions and with understanding of its impacts on all aspects of life.

• To ensure youth recognition as a key stakeholder in the water sector.

Key actions

SYPW took a different approach than many young initiatives in Sudan; this was to study the problems before jumping into the solutions. With a little money and huge dreams, SYPW managed to reach many villages around Sudan, investigate the water problems and came up with solutions based on concrete data and real studies. SYPW involved all community members in the discussions related to water problems as well as proposing solutions. SYPW also worked hard to increase youth involvement in the water sector, and encouraged females to participate in the solutions.

The first field activity of SYPW was conducted by a team consisted of three female engineers, who did all the fieldwork and the interviews. They proved that Sudanese females have the ability to do a lot in the water sector in Sudan, and they encouraged other females to participate in the coming field visits. Another activity implemented by SYPW targeted children in one of the refugee camps in Western Sudan. The activity focused mainly on hygiene promotion for 1500 children (half of them were female). In addition to the field visits, awareness and educational programs, SYPW have been invited to attend several meetings to discuss water related issues, where they shared their opinions and prospective with other stakeholders in the water sector. Behind all above-mentioned areas of activities, SYPW also contributed in combating the wave of national disaster that affected the country, such as watery diarrhea.
