Empowering Change: Youth Position at the 10th World Water Forum and Beyond

World Youth Parliament for Water

Advocate

Description

This is a blog written by Alyssa D’Addio, member of the World Youth Parliament for Water and delegate of the 6th General Assembly of the WYPW.

In May 2024, 70 young leaders from over 50 countries gathered in Bali, Indonesia, for the 6th General Assembly of the World Youth Parliament for Water (WYPW). The delegates, eager to influence decision-makers for change after months of virtual preparatory meetings, collaborated in person to share their experiences. It was here that working sessions began to prepare and finalize the WYPW’s advocacy messages for the 10th World Water Forum.

The messages focused on three critical themes: 1) Water & Peace, 2) Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), and 3) Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). One afternoon, delegates divided and conquered (in groups), offering their respective ideas, solutions, and expertise for each theme. Leveraging members’ collective notes, a voluntary working group of 16 delegates then synthesized and refined key messages from each theme, drafting the WYPW position paper.

After several session-packed days and some late nights, the WYPW Youth Statement was created.

The 10th World Water Forum Youth Statement presents 3 demands and 12 practical actions, emphasizing the importance of youth inclusion and agency. This document is a tool to support collective advocacy efforts through holistic and targeted messages. We urge all delegates, youth advocates, allies, and stakeholders to use and share this document in their national advocacy efforts.
